volume levels in iax-rpt > app-rpt?

I have installed v1.1.27 of iax-rpt to talk to my app-rpt asterisk system - and it works.
However, the volume level being heard at the asterisk end seems very low - even with the mic gain turned up to where the green LED indicator is slammed up against the right side.
I friend of mine has done the same and experienced the same thing when connecting to my repeater.

I posted this request on the app-rpt reflector and they sent me over here.

Do inter-IAX2 communications just work automatically so no level settings are required?

It sounds like links to other "real" asterisk nodes are OK.
